Single Tooth Dental Implant | New York

The Procedure: Surgical visit

After a comprehensive examination (including radiographic or computerized tomographic imaging), local anesthesia (by injection) or general anesthesia (per patient's request) is given prior to the surgical procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue and an "ostetomy" or space is prepared in the jaw bone so that a titanium dental implant can be placed. The gum tissue is sutured closed and the implant is allowed to "fuse" or "osseointegrate" with the bone for a period of 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on the quality of bone. Sometimes, an implant can be placed immediately after a tooth is extracted and a provisional (or temporary) restoration can be placed.

Restorative Visit: Abutment selection and impressioning

After your implant has osseointegrated, a titanium abutment needs to be placed into the implant to hold a crown. In certain situations, a custom abutment may be necessary. These can be made of titanium, gold, or of a high-strength ceramic for highly esthetic areas. After the abutment is inserted into the implant, an impression needs to be made so that a permanent crown can be fabricated in the laboratory. At this visit, you may receive a temporary restoration to contour soft tissues and for esthetic reasons.
